Going-To-The-Sun Road in Montana's Glacier National Park is expected to fully open Monday to all motor vehicles for the summer season.
Saturday will see a partial opening of the east side of the road from the St. Mary entrance to Logan Pass. Some popular hiking routes, including the Highline Trail, could remain closed due to continued snowy conditions.
With the projected full opening Monday, this will likely be the last weekend for bicyclists to tour the west side of Going-To-The-Sun Road without vehicle traffic. It's also the last weekend of the hiker/biker shuttle for the 2025 season.
Crews spend weeks each spring digging the road out from deep snow. Going-To-The-Sun Road is a "must do" for most park visitors and is widely considered one of the most beautiful national park roads.
A few things to keep in mind this summer at Glacier National Park:
- Rockfalls or other changes in conditions could delay the opening of Going-To-The-Sun Road.
- Bicycle restrictions are in place once the road opens to motor vehicles, typically limiting access in certain directions during peak hours.
- During the summer, timed entry reservations are required for all vehicles and motorcycles entering Going-To-The-Sun Road from the west side of the park between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Reservations are not needed for the road at the St. Mary entrance on the east side of the park.
- When Going-To-The-Sun Road is fully open, additional timed entry vehicle reservations are available online. They're released at 7 p.m. each evening for the next day.
- Timed entry vehicle reservations are only available online, via Recreation.gov.
- Visitors should practice proper bear safety procedures, to include not stopping near bears along the road. Carry bear spray and know how to use it. A bear was recently euthanized at Glacier after aggressively seeking food from humans.
- Parking at Logan Pass, Apgar Village, and other areas may be congested or temporarily unavailable during peak summer hours. Daily shuttle service along Going-To-The-Sun Road will begin operating July 1, on a first-come, first-served basis from the Apgar and St. Mary visitor centers with several stops along Going-To-The-Sun Road.
- Conditions can remain hazardous even in summer, especially through the Rim Rock area. Drivers should be aware of potential rockfalls and should not slow down or stop in this section.
- The popular Many Glacier Valley has significantly reduced parking spots due to construction.
- Check the park website for the latest updates on closures, construction and wildlife incidents. You can also sign up for text alerts by texting the “GNPROADS” to 333111.
